Boomers: Bad to the Bone

Well… according to a whole lot of media out there, Boomers are not your typical aging generation. Lose the image of the sweet little cookie-baking grandma and the cute little TV-watching granddad and enter a wholly different picture, one that includes a high rate of divorce. Sex. Alcohol. Drugs. And Motorcycles.

According to the Senior Housing News, a great deal of older adults are partaking in sex – some 80% of adults between the ages of 50-90 are sexually active – and are using drugs and alcohol, as they coast into a new phase of life. Between 2000 and 2009 the number of sexually transmitted infections in this age group has doubled, and according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the number of older adults who reported illegal drug use within a year almost doubled between 2002 and 2007. In this study, 40% stated they didn’t begin to use drugs or alcohol until after age 48.

The rise in drug addiction among members of the generation is particularly alarming and dangerous, given that abusing these substances can worsen age-related health conditions. An increasing number of Boomers are appearing in emergency rooms and at rehab facilities throughout the country.

In cases where you are permitted to exercise, it’s important to always be on the lookout for warning signs that you should stop exercising, such as dizziness or chest pain. See a full list of these warning signs here.

In general, it is important to check with your physician before pursing any form of exercise to make sure it’s ok given your condition.

If all is well and there is no reason not to exercise, most physicians, and the American Pregnancy Association, agree it can play a very important role, both in alleviating some of the less pleasant symptoms of pregnancy (lower back pain, moodiness, sleeplessness), and in preparing for birth.
